The harbour town
The settlement grew from Kamara, the port of ancient Lato on the slopes above Mirabello Bay. Trade, fishing, and life by the water shaped the town long before the chapel of Saint Nicholas gave it its name. Today the waterfront, cafés, and ferries are still the pulse of eastern Crete.
Lake Voulismeni, linked to the sea by a narrow channel, sits at the heart of town. Its banks are lined with tavernas and eucalyptus trees, and in the evenings it becomes the natural gathering point for both locals and visitors.
